Fine-tuning Promises an Excellent Picture

JVC's original picture modes(DLA-HD950)

Recreating the quality of film in movie theatres with every nuance faithfully reproduced was what JVC had in mind when it equipped the DLA-HD950 with a Cinema mode. And in order to get the most out of this Cinema mode, JVC carefully analysed the difference in coloration between images from projectors and those of film.

Colours displayed by projectors and those found in film are processed differently; projectors display colours using an additive colour mixture method where the primary RGB colours are layered on top of each other while conversely, a subtractive colour mixture method that filters CMY colours out of the light source is used for film in movie theatres. With the additive colour mixture method, colours become brighter as colours are added and due to an increase in energy, eventually turn white. However, the opposite can be said for the subtractive colour mixture method where colours become darker and eventually turn black. JVC engineers thoroughly analysed the two methods and succeeded in developing an optimised picture display by incorporating advanced processing via a built-in LSI. This means that what was once considered difficult to reproduce in the home environment such as the delicate textures and nuances of film can now be seen just like at a movie theatre.

A variety of picture modes

There are seven*1 picture modes that can be chosen to optimally match the source content. These modes can be selected by pressing the direct input buttons on the remote controller and users can customise up to two picture settings with the User 1 and User 2 modes.

CINEMA1 Faithfully reproduces all the nuances of film in theatres.
CINEMA2 Enhances colour reproduction with expanded colour space and higher HDTV resolution. Ideal for action movies, SF movies, etc.
CINEMA3 On-screen dynamics strengthened and colourful hues are enhanced. Ideal for animated films, movies with lots of CG, etc.
NATURAL For general video-source viewing. Ideal for viewing dramas, sports events, videos, etc.
STAGE Vividly recreates the atmosphere of live, on-stage excitement. Ideal for musical operas, live concerts, etc.
DYNAMIC Improves viewing in areas such as the living room, etc. that cannot be made pitch dark.
THX*2 The Home Theatre Mode certified by THX.
USER 1 or USER 2 Colour and/or contrast in all of the aforementioned modes can be customised together with Colour Management and Gamma Control, then saved for later use (USER 1 or USER 2) and recalled from the remote.

Screen Adjustment Mode

As the quality of projected images may vary slightly depending on the type of screen and its RGB reflective characteristics, JVC’s new D-ILA projectors have screen adjustment modes that allow users to select the optimum mode to match screen characteristics for more natural and balanced colour reproduction.

Excellent colour rendition (DLA-HD950)

The DLA-HD950 features Colour Management that interpolates colours individually by R, G, B, C, Y, or M, in the three separate axes of colour phase, chroma saturation, and brightness. Up to three customised colour settings can be stored for future use.

Customised gamma control on-screen

Manual adjustment of gamma curve is possible via an on-screen display, allowing the viewer to adjust projector luminance levels by either increasing contrast in scenes that are too dark or dimming washed-out scenes to ensure precise brightness levels suited to individual preferences. Up to three settings can be adjusted and stored for future use.
